The following health promoting or health care organizations are addressing SDH through action-centered research and projects!
The University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health created the Center for Health Equity which aims to understand and reduce health disparities in underserved populations, particularly those in western Pennsylvania.
The Young Foundation is a think tank based in London that is focused on social innovation. Although its work has been closely tied with the NHS, its ideas and implementation could be broadly applied to other settings. For example, the Care4Care is the Foundation's newest program aiming to provide caregiving support to the elderly through mutual exchange. Care4Care members earn ‘care credits’ by supporting/caring for an older person in their local community. The hours of support members provide are recorded in their individual care credit account.
The Kellogg Health Scholars Program is a two-year postdoctoral fellowship program. Fellows join a growing cadre of leaders skilled in research on social determinants of health, academic-community partnering, community-based participatory research, and application of research to strengthen advocacy and achieve policy change. The notes from KHSP's last annual meeting (2011) highlight some of the latest research on the connection between SDH and health outcomes.
The Rand Corporation has published a number of research papers and analyses on neighborhood influences on health.
Centene Corporation operates Medicaid managed care in several states. Kentucky Spirit Health, a subsidiary of Centene (pulling out of Kentucky however) offers a number of innovative programs for beneficiaries. Through the CentAccount® program, Kentucky Spirit Health Plan members can earn rewards. These dollar rewards are put onto a personalized pre-paid MasterCard®. Simply doing things that help members stay healthy (pregnancy visits, postpartum visits) allows them to earn rewards!
