SDH projects for students

The following are a number of potential research projects that we have designed with students in mind. All of these have been thought out and could work well as Scholarly Projects at PittMed. More detailed project descriptions are available (objective, methodology, etc)--just contact us if you're interested in any of these or if you want to design another project in SDH!

1.   Medical students and residents’ knowledge of health determinants – a focus group exploration
              - Currently in progress

2.   Clinicians' knowledge, attitudes and perception of SDH
-This project would start off where Project 1 ends, using a survey format and focusing on some of the                      pertinent points identified in the focus groups to determine clinician attitudes towards SDH.

3.   To what extent do various local oragnizations address SDH?
             - This project would use interviews built around a scorecard questionnaire to gauge the extent and means                by which various local organizations address SDH.

4.   Collection and dissemination of physician-led, clinic-based interventions that address health               equity
             - Many clinicians have already developed their own techniques to address SDH in practice. The goal of                      this project is to identify useful techniques and create a resource that would facilitate the use of these                      practices in clinics on a wider scale.

5.   Can patients be activated to modify their environment?
             - Physicians are commonly frustrated by lack of control over the environmental factors involved in patient                health. This project aims to determine whether or not we as physicians can help motivate patients to                      change some of these factors.

6.   How do various neighborhood factors affect health outcomes?
             - This topic could result in several different projects, as well as interesting collaborations with other groups                around Pittsburgh. It would use local and/or national data to help quantify the effect that various social                  and environmental factors have on health outcomes.

6.   Can we improve clinician knowledge of SDH issues and increase efforts at addressing them?
             - SDH sometimes feels like an overwhelming topic to address in clinic. This project would look at whether                  or not providing physicians with fast facts and examples of how these issues can be addressed would                      improve comfort levels in addressing these issues.

7. Does public transportation access play a role in health?
             - This project looks to determine whether or not public transportation access has an effect on certain                        health outcomes.
